Quilt I wish

I am working on a quilt, but I never have time to WORK on it.  Instead it's this heap that needs ironed.

But, I can't iron it because I am doing a different patchwork, a patchwork on my wall:

It's a patchwork of tape that will be painted grey over this white for my daughters bedroom.  Here's the entire wall.

I've still got a lot of work to do and my hubby want me to hurry so he can paint it and move onto the ceilings.  So, gotta get to work!

By the way that quilt I'm making will go in this room and the colors of paint were selected to match the quilt fabric.
As was the paint for these picture frames for her walls.  There will be 9 picture frames and 2 jewelry cork board frames.

2015 BOM

My local quilting shop is having me work with their BOM for the coming year.  I only got the fabric samples about 10 days ago and they need the quilt in their shop for advertising ASAP.
So what have I been doing.
Cutting...sewing...ironing...cutting...sewing...ironing

I let them know the border will have to wait as will the quilting, but here is what this Curve It Up quilt by SewkindofWonderful will look like:

I love the color combo that they selected.

Now to get back to work on the two quilts I need to still make for Christmas gifts.

Sassy finished!

Yeah, I finally have the quilt completely finished!!!

It is made with the fabric Sassy line by Moda.  Here is how much fabric it took: 1 sassy jelly roll, 2/3 yard sassy fabric for border, 1/2 yard sassy fabric for binding lots of Kona cotton white for sashing and inner border and 4 yards sassy fabric for backing.

This twin size quilt turned out to be 67 1/2" x 84 1/2"

I free-arm quilted this with a floral print.

I love how this stripes binding just pulls it all together.

It is (or will be) available in my etsy store

My curve it up quilt by SewkindofWonderful has 10 of 12 blocks complete.

My Alyssa quilt just needs that 6" green floral border sewn on and the top will be complete!

And this Jellyroll quilts binding is 50% finished, hopefully I can get it listed on etsy early next week.

Excitement

Every quilter knows the excitement that comes with starting a new quilt.
As I've said before, I am making quilts for each of my older daughters for Christmas.  They are getting new bedrooms and so I am decorating their rooms, wallpaper, paint and all to go with the fabric I chose for their quilts.  Yesterday I shared what I have done on my 10 year olds (DD2) quilt.
The problem is, I had NO EXCITMENT when working with my oldest daughters (DD1) quilt.  I really loved the triangles I wanted to do, but it just didn't jive with her wallpaper and the plans I have for her room.
So, this morning I had a thought 'I purchased Hopscotch quilt pattern so look at it, it may just be what I need to make'.  I dug the pattern out and yes this is what I want to make, and I only need to purchase 1 more yard of fabric to make the entire quilt!

Here is the quilt:

You can find this Thimble Blossom quilt here

My quilt will be made with these colors

Teal:

Pink:

 Yellow:

And grey:

Most of the main fabrics are made by Henry Glass in the Sweet Harmony collection by Amy Hamberlin.

My back will be this Quatre Foil fabric by Riley Blake, this is what 210" of fabric looks like

The 'hopscotch' quilt is made to be 60"x70", not quite what I need for a full bed.  So I did what any quilter would do, change the pattern to make it bigger and better.  Lots of planning but I think I have it.
Now I am excited and need to finish DD2's quilt so I can get this one going!

Piecing

As the weather gets cooler colder and colder outside, and with Thanksgiving Holiday just a few days away, I seem to be turned to my kitchen.  I really love cooking, it ranks up there with laying on the beaches of Kauai in the warm sunshine, and sewing my heart away on a new quilt.

Sunday I had a wonderful time fixing a small version of Thanksgiving, all it was missing was the jello salads, turkey and stuffing. (Plus the 50 appetizers my family thinks is necessary).

I even had my 10 year old daughter make this delicious Apple Pie, my older daughter made German Chocolate Brownies and both were so YUMMY!

I had the middle daughter make the pie, to try out this pie crust recipe.  It was her first ever trial and well its a keeper and I will use it for the 5 pies I get to make next Wednesday for Thanksgiving dinner.

Today while daughter #4 was at preschool, I could actually work on the Christmas Quilt I am making for that 10 year old daughter.  I had most of the blocks made, just needed to finish squaring up a few of them (well about 30).

This quilt will be 8 blocks wide by 10 blocks long

I actually got all the rows pieced together and now just need to sew them together during preschool tomorrow!

Day?

Well, I now have 6 quilts to make and finish before Christmas!  I guess my 25 days of finishing UFO's is halted at once!

I have been asked to lead a 6 month BOM at my local fabric store but I haven't received the fabric yet.  So, I decided that since I have never used the quick curve ruler before I had better make a sample for me quickly.

Here is the 4 patches block

Rail fence block :

And the churn dash and sawtooth star blocks:

As you can tell it is the curve it up quilt made by sew kind of wonderful.  Hopefully I can finish the top by Monday and quilt it by Wednesday

Here's what I have made so far:

Day 1

Yesterday I decided it was time to do a 25 day challenge and get all these UFO's finished!  I will try to post my progress each day.

Day 1:  I finished sewing the blocks, sashed it all, sewed the blocks together, and added the border.

I also got the back all sewn together and used the scraps to make modern strip across the middle.

I will apologize for this being a little shorter, but the main detail was in the prior post for making this quilt top. You can see the prior instruction post here

To put the top together I made vertical strips: 2 strips were 5: 3x3 blocks and 2 strips were 1: 3x2 then 1: 3x3 block repeated twice.  Each of the blocks had 2 1/2" strips of sashing between them.  When the strips were made, the strips with only 3x3 blocks is 2" shorter than the other strips.  Because of this, I added a strip of sashing to the bottom of those two strips.
Next, put sashing on the sides of the long strips you just made and sew them together.
Last, add 5 1/2" border around the outside edge.
Now your top is finished.

Day 2

It's Day 2 of my Cleaning Out the UFO challenge.  I

For Christmas I am making my older two daughters quilts for their new rooms  (they will be moving into during Christmas break).  In prior posts I showed an Alyssa quilt, you can find the tutorial starting here.  The true reason for me making that quilt was a trial to see how the real twin sized quilt for my daughter Alyssa would work out.  She picked this 'Beautiful' fabric, made by Riley Blake, out last summer while we were driving through the Midwest on our family vacation and just happening to come upon the Missouri quilt company store.  Of coarse, I had to make the family stop and the rest is history.

Today I added the white to all 80 of these blocks, ironed the white down and trimmed them to perfect squares.

My older daughter also  got her braces on today and so I spent a whole 2 hours at the orthodontist wishing I had my sewing machine with me!

She is just starting 4H again after making this quilt last year.  This year she will be making the Piece of Cake 3 quilt , by thimble blossoms.

Here is some of the fun fabric she has picked out to make this quilt, it's the new Cotton&Steel line by RJR fabric.  If you haven't seen it, you need to its gorgeous!

Sassy!

About a year ago, my daughter and I found a fun jelly roll of Moda Sassy fabric at our favorite store, Cotton Shop on a great clearance price!  I quickly drew up a pattern and planned a quilt to make.
Problem was, clearance fabric is hard to find.  Finally a few months later I found the perfect fabrics at a long forgotten store (the mending shed) not far from my home.  They were just what I wanted from this Sassy line for the binding, border and backing.

To make this quilt I needed:
1 Jellyroll
4 yards backing fabric (pink)
1 1/4 yrd border fabric (green stripe)
1/2 yrd binding fabric (blue)
Cream fabric for sashing and inner border

My first step was to stitch 2 jelly roll strips together, repeat this until you have 20: 2 strip sets.  Next, cut each of these strips into 4 1/2" squares.

Each strip will make 9 squares and so after cutting the 20 strips, you should have 180 squares.

Now we put the blocks together!  We will want to make 16: 3x3 blocks and 6: 3x2 blocks

Chain stitching really comes in handy putting these blocks together, it will save lots of time and keep your blocks organized.
If you keep them in order and get your rows together correctly (as pictured above) you can just fold one row over another to sew the rows together.

When you get these all sewn together, iron, starch & square up the blocks to be 12 1/2"

Because of the way the quilt flows, we will sew our blocks together in columns.  Next sash top and bottom of block with cream fabric.

Sew them together into long strips.  I have 5: 3x3 blocks in one column strip (Make 2 of these) and then 1: 3x2, 1: 3x3, 1: 3x2, 1: 3x3, 1: 3x2 & 1: 3x3 for the other column strip (make two of these)

Hope you are enjoying this, I will continue on with this quilt in the next few days.  Check back soon :)

Alyssa Quilt: part 3 (finishing it up)

Today it's time to finish up this quilt!
You can check out Step 1 and Step 2 in prior blog posts

Step 1:
Last time we pieced the blocks together so the first step today is add your border.  On this quilt I added a 3 1/2" border of a coordinating Miss Kate fabric.  On the twin Alyssa quilt I will be adding two borders, the inner border will be a 2 1/2" white border (my light color will be white on that quilt) and the outer will be a 4" colorful border.

Step 2:

Baste your quilt.  (I duck tape my individual pieces to the concrete floor in my basement and then pin them together.)

Step 3:

Quilt your quilt.

Step 4:

Bind your quilt (sorry on this post I'm not going into much detail on this)

Most quilts I stitch the binding to the front and then hand stitch the binding to the back, but baby quilts get washed more and need more strength so I stitch the binding to the back first and the stitch it to the front like this:

There you have it, these quilts are so easy to make!

I made two of these Alyssa style baby quilts (and I still have fabric to make another quilt for a cousin having their first baby):

One had one floralish back and one has a polka dot back so they can be used for twins. They are both available in shop oetsy
