Friday Sampler

I haven't had time to work on my farmers wife blocks for almost a month.  Actually this is the first Friday I have been home in four weeks.  First, we were in Seattle, then Alaska, then Colorado and now finally this week we are home.  I will try to catch up, but right now it isn't happening.

Well my blocks for this week are block #6 and block #7  

Block #6, the Big Dipper, was a very quick and easy block to make, my only problem is I didn't pay much attention and use the templates.  So...  my block turned out 9" instead of 6".  That's alright though because I was going to change the sizes to make my quilt more like this one here by Starwood quilter, having a big variety of block sizes.

Block #7 took a little more time and I had to rip a couple of scenes, just to get all those points perfect.  Don't look to close I see two mistakes I didn't fix!  This bock took a total of 36 tiny triangle blocks (template 13).  Cutting them out wasn't fun but sewing them together was worse!

Hailey started her summer sewing camp this week.  They made the cutest pillow cases and water bottle holders. Can't wait to see their projects in the next couple of weeks. I signed her up because I took 4H at her age and it isn't offered around here.  This will help her, hopefully some day.  At home she is working on this 4 patch quilt.  The fabric is AdornIt and we both fell in love with it in the fabric store.  She would be working on it right now, if only she hadn't accidentally broken my needle a few hours ago.

 

Truthfully I have to many projects going on right now.    And, I have to many new ones I want to start in my head.  Please remember I am a scrapbooker even more than a quilter, well at least I was a few months ago.

Friday Sampler

Every week I think to myself how I am going to get so many blocks made for my sampler quilt.  Yet, each week time goes by as I run here an there with my children and I don't seem to have any extra time to pursue my hobbies.  Here is a quick shot of what I was doing last Friday:

I was running along side her, trying to keep her going.  That only started my day and it was the calmest day of the week!

This week has been much better and yesterday afternoon I even had time to set down at my sewing machine.  Let me say we ended up having Papa Murphy's pizza for supper and that my 3 year old got covered in mud during that time and had to have a bath before the band concert last night.

I am finally getting into this craft blog again and I have posted more in the last 2 months than the previous 2 years, hopefully it's starting to look a little better.  My family blog has been lacking for a while.  Maybe now I can get it caught up too!

Well, that all being said here are the blocks I worked on yesterday.  I was so surprised that all of them came out to a perfect 6 1/2 inches!!!

  

I love this block, it is definitely one of my favorite patterns so far.  That could be because my corners were PERFECT!!!  

This is Joanie's Basket, Block #3, as you can see the basket handle is missing.  I haven't figured out yet what I will be doing here.  Applique or ribbon, I'll decide today.

I really love how the colors worked together on this block.  It's a great block to do when busy because it took about 5 minutes from start to finish.

Not quite sure about the colors for the bats wing...  I do really like the block and it was an easy block also.

I rotated the colors a little here and love the outcome.  Definitely a favorite!
This is a Block of the Month (BOM) for the Cotton shop here, they're an awesome store!!!  This doesn't look anything like the original block in their store because I (intentionally) flip flopped the triangle block, putting the colors backwards.

Friday Sampler

Today I am having some missionaries over for dinner and need a clean house. With a 3 year old and a 6 year old roaming the house continuously that's a problem.  I didn't know if I would be able to find time to make my blocks this morning, while keeping a clean house. It's almost 12 pm and my blocks are finished my bathrooms have been cleaned and all that's left is my dusting and mopping. Looks like I or more accomplished than I thought I would!

I chose simple blocks again this week just because I'm working in my skills and need to slowly progress in block difficulty. Ha ha, I learned I needed to do that the first week. Each of these blocks were really easy and it took a whole 45 minutes from start to finish (meaning set up, work, and clean up).

Farmers wife Block #2: Autumn Tints

I like the Rainbow Flower block much better than the Autumn tints block, but I think they both came together really good.  I like them both much better than I like last weeks creations.  

I want to thank Ellie from Craft, Sew & Create for helping inspire me with her beautiful colors!  She uses such bright, summery, colors.  My quilt is settling for the richer colors but I love the inspiration she gives me with her cheerful colors and patterns.  I'm now up to 8 blocks with a long way to go!

This coming week I will be working on another quilting project.  It involves lots of applique so we'll see how that goes.  My grandmother tried to teach me how to applique years ago just like a dear older lady in my neighborhood tried to teach my girls.  I didn't learn then and neither did they, but now is my time to finally learn how.  

Quilt blocks

I sewed together 2 new blocks today. My daughter had her birthday party today with 21 girls! I also took her out for lunch to our favorite Brick Oven. Together, these took away lots of my sewing time. With all of this I managed to Cut, Sew and Create two blocks......really simple blocks!

Block one is called The Propeller: I think it turned out really well (it will look better when it is ironed)

Block two is Farmers Wife #81 Snowball block.  I will be redoing part of this block, the triangles just don't look right.

Farmers Wife Heritage Quilt week #2

My "Heritage" quilt, I have really enjoyed finding blocks for this quilt.  Most of the blocks will be from my Farmers Wife Quilt book, but I will continue to look elsewhere for other blocks that represent some part of my heritage.  My goal is to work on and complete two quilt blocks a week, I am just starting so I know to begin with, they will take longer. I know that I should start with really easy, square block.

Today I was a little crazy and picked two very detailed blocks, what was I thinking!  Both blocks I worked with today had so many triangles!!  The material is just some random cloth in my stash, sorry I can't tell you where it came from.

First, you need to know my history, I was raised in a farm town in a valley in Colorado.  While my father is not a farmer anymore, he has been at different times in his life, and I was raised like a "farmer's daughter" would be.  This is a 6" block.

My second block is called "Wyoming Valley" and well Wyoming isn't any part of my heritage, but Colorado is and I am from a Colorado valley.  These two blocks both shared many similar characteristics and went well together.

As you can see in the picture below, the block is not finished...... I messed up and sewed a few things the wrong direction.  It will be corrected soon and I will get this block finished.   Sorry about the unfinished block!

Quilt blocks#1

Today I did my first blocks!  I have been wanting to do this farmers wife quilt along for a while, but I want a king size quilt for my bed.

So when the local quilting store started a 1940's Block of the Month sampler quilt, I thought this would be perfect to combine the two and get my country sampler quilt!

This has taken me a while to start, just collecting the fabric, and finishing off a few other craft projects I needed out of the way.  Here is the collection of fabric I have to make this quilt.

I wanted the material to stay old fashion country style.   I also want to blocks to range from 6x6 to 12x12, so I will be changing the templates to many of the farmers wife squares.  I have to say thanks to starwood quilter for showing me how this is possible.
